International Journal of Digital Earth

Special Issue on “Supporting Future Earth with Global Geospatial Information

Guest Editors: Jun Chen and Songnian Li

Aim

Future Earth is a global research initiative aiming at developing the knowledge for effective response to the risks and opportunities of global environmental change and for supporting transformation towards a sustainable world. Dynamic Planet, Global Development and Transformations towards Sustainability are its three research themes, which depend critically on the availability and utilization of reliable information at both local and global scales. With the advancement of remote sensing and spatial information technologies, more and more spatial datasets at both global and local scales will increasingly become available in addition to those that have already been produced in the past. Supporting Future Earth with reliable global geo-information is becoming a key challenge for assuring successful global understanding, environmental change analysis, transformational development and dynamic modeling. This special issue of the International Journal of Digital Earth (IJDE) is devoted to the latest development on global geospatial data production and sharing, successful application experiences of global geo-information in environmental change analysis and sustainability studies, examination and analysis of up-to-date user requirements and key gaps arising from Future Earth studies, and identification of major challenges.

The IJDE is the official Journal of the International Society for Digital Earth and is published by Taylor & Francis of the UK. It is the first professional and international peer‐reviewed journal in the digital earth research field around the world. The SCI 2013 impact factor for this journal is now at 2.212.

Today, data is being generated, contributed, collected and processed at rates faster than any other time in history.  While considerable research has gone into organizing, synthesizing and making sense of these data, provenance of both the original data and the methods applied to them is often ignored or considered as an after thought.  The need for data provenance continues to play an important role in information science, arguably more so in today's sensor-rich data universe.  As the amount of data contributed through social media applications, mobile devices, and other user-generated sources continues to increase, so does our need to investigate the trustworthiness of the information and the expertise of the people contributing it.  Not only does provenance improve accountability but it also allows scientists, policy makers, and the public to ask bigger questions about the content.  Through provenance we can begin to ask questions surrounding the credibility of the content, sources, and methods used in collecting and contributing the data.

The geospatial sciences offer a unique perspective to the discussion of credibility and provenance.   As all data are generated with some level of location information, space and place are subjects on which questions of credibility can be asked.  What components are important for assessing credibility in spatial information? Is assessing platial information credibility any different than investigating other forms of information credibility?  Does the location at which data is generated, collected, organized or processed impact its trustworthiness? Do the terms used to describe these data imply the same thing to different users and communities?

Topics of interest for this special issue include, but are not limited to:
- Provenance of spatial and platial data
- Trust and expertise in user-generated geo-content
- Credibility in volunteered geographic information
- Authoritative vs. crowd-sourced geoinformation
- Geosocial / Location-based social networking applications
- Geodata privacy
- Uncertainty in data quality
- Spatio-temporal credibility models
- Role of provenance and credibility in spatial analytics
- Spatial data validation techniques
- Gamification
- Motivation for data contribution
- Location-based gaming
- Platial vs. Spatial credibility
- Credibility concerns unique to geodata
- Semantics, ontologies and the representation of scientific workflows and data

Submissions of the following types will be considered:
- Research papers on original research results
- Surveys on the state of research in the outlined areas
- System and Application reports on research enabling tools, lessons learned from applications, user interaction & interfaces

Please Note
Authors are encouraged to submit high quality, original work that has neither appeared in, nor is under consideration by, other journals. All open submissions will be peer reviewed subject to the standards of the journal.  Please read the review and editorial polices of the journal: http://josis.org/index.php/josis/about/editorialPolicies

Please refer to the JoSIS website for detailed instructions on paper submission. Choose “Special Feature Research Articles” from the first drop down menu in the submission form and “Provenance & Credibility” in the Comments to the Editor. http://josis.org/index.php/josis/about/submissions"

A NASA "Nyílt innováció" programja

A GSDI Legal and SocioEcon szakbizottsági listáján Kate Lance PhD (Yale Egyetem) adta közre az alábbi közérdekű figyelemfelhívást. Akiket érdekelnek a hasonló lehetőségek, regisztráljanak a GSDI legalul megadott hírleveire. Költségmentes!
"NASA is seeking researchers to evaluate technology design contests, and to use data analytics to formulate better challenges, according to a new solicitation.

The agency is attempting to examine its "Open Innovation" programs -- often large, crowdsourced design challenges open to the public. NASA is looking for research on the "empirically-validated science" of open innovation tournaments, such as the "design parameters" that could encourage innovation, among other information.

See notice: NASA Open Innovation Research
Solicitation Number: NNH15HEOMD002L
Response deadline: September 2, 2015

The research will apply both to NASA and other government agencies. According to the solicitation for sources, the team NASA selects should be able to, among other tasks:

Provide presentations and training to educate federal employees on using open innovation
Evaluate the architecture, and scoring mechanisms, of open innovation challenges
List plans to use data science to design open innovation challenges

NASA has been experimenting with open innovation for several years. For instance, since 2012, the space agency has hosted a series of "Space Apps" challenges during which participants use publicly released open data to make apps that could potentially be useful to the agency.

Citizen generated data - DataShift pilot-project pályázati felhívások

Kép forrása: DataShift Briefing Note a Civicus.org weboldalán
Kate Lance PhD, (Yale Egyetem) írja a GSDI regionális hírleveleiben illetve a Legal and SocioEcon szakbizottság körlevelében az alábbi figyelemfelhívást.
Közreadása három okból is közérdekű:
- lehetőségre hívja fel a figyelmet,
-a napjainka egyre inkább érvényesülő trend a tárgya,
A szervezetnek egyéni tagjai is lehetnek.

"DataShift ( http://civicus.org/thedatashift/ ) launched three calls for researchers based in three DataShift pilot locations: Argentina, East Africa (Tanzania and Kenya), and Nepal. The research will focus on the long-term impact of citizen-generated data initiatives.
The deadline for submissions for this research project has been extended until 18.00 CEST on Wednesday, 19th August 2015
DataShift sees citizen-generated data as data that people or their organisations produce to directly monitor, demand or drive change on issues that affect them. It is actively given by citizens, providing direct representations of their perspectives and an alternative to datasets collected by governments or international institutions. See recently published DataShift briefing that explains what citizen generated data is and why it is important at: http://civicus.org/images/ER%20cgd_brief.pdf

This scope of work is projected to include:
- Identification of at least five (preferably ongoing or completed) citizen-generated data initiatives based in the respective pilot locations that address issues relevant to the Sustainable Development Goals. Selection of initiatives will be determined in consultation with the DataShift team.
- An in-depth assessment of each initiative’s long-term or ongoing impact, looking especially at:
Use of the data: Has the data been used by policy makers, civil society organisations or other actors – and if so, how?

Data quality: Are any levels of verification built into the initiative? How sound is the data, particularly if it comes from multiple sources?

Sustainability of the initiative: What is the initiative’s projected lifespan? Is this clearly indicated? Are there plans to maintain the initiative’s online presence after the period of data collection ends?

Local context: How is data on the topics that citizen-generated data initiatives address received at the local level: is it considered to be trustworthy?
- A summary of key findings and trends, drawn from the assessed initiatives.
Potential researchers for this contract should submit their CV together with an indicative budget and two-page statement on how they would approach this piece of work and their relevant experience. Bids should be sent by 18.00 CEST on Wednesday 19th August.
The maximum budget for the work is USD2,500. For more details, please see the links below for the calls for proposals:
